We\u2019re making progress. I mean, we\u2019re progressing, and\nsurely that\u2019s the same thing. We\u2019re moving ahead further into the season and\ntaking in as many useful lessons in the process as present themselves. \u2018Lessons\u2019,\nof course, happen by chance as we dip into the various Alphaday offerings. They\u2019ve\nbeen put together by fellow members, so we know there\u2019ll be plenty there to\ncaptivate our interest and stimulate our writing buds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s\nAlpha agenda is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alphaday 9, Season\nXVI agenda:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This\n     bulletin from me<\/li><li>The\n     results and feedback for The Open Page Ed.2 from Elke<\/li><li>The\n     collated entries for the literary challenge from Stephen<\/li><li>The\n     brief for Challenge 7 from Morgen<\/li><li>A\n     Writers\u2019 Reads prompt from Gloria<\/li><li>A\n     call for Log news from Phil<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\nlooks full of promise and I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll all be keeping an eye on your inboxes\nas this filters through to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alpha news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nrecent storms and flooding in the UK have left some of our members in a soggy mess.\nI\u2019m not sure how many have tales of woe to tell, but Morgen and Gloria were\nleft stranded as flooding made roads impassable in North Powys and\nHerefordshire respectively. At least their homes were safe and snug, but it\u2019s\nfrightening all the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>General news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ngood news is that we\u2019ve got a whole extra day this year. What are you going to\ndo with that luxury? That\u2019s like 24 generous helpings of the one hour we get\nwhen the clocks go back \u2013 and don\u2019t we all love that extra hour in bed? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nprefer the simple term \u2018Leap year\u2019. Bissextile sounds like something that\nshould be included with LGBTQ. Looking into the reasons for adding an extra day\nmade me question our understanding of time. If a year is really 365.25 days\nlong, then why don\u2019t the days gradually go lopsided? They even add and take\naway leap seconds to try to keep up with the fact that the earth\u2019s rotation is\ncharmingly irregular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hats\noff to those astronomers who nearly got it right all those millennia ago. Even\nthe final 16<sup>th<\/sup> century adjustments of the Gregorian calendar are an\namazing feat of observation and calculation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nFrench Revolution led to an attempt at creating a secular, decimal calendar\nwith 10-day weeks and days divided into two 10-hour parts. A good idea in theory\nto simplify time calculations that still give schoolchildren (and others)\nheadaches, but old habits prevailed and the experiment only lasted about 14\nyears. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make\nthe most of that extra day \u2013 and all the other days as well, for that matter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carpe\ndiem!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christine<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi Alphas, Welcome to Alphaday 9, Season XVI.
